A NEW hospice being planned for Glasgow has received a welcome cash boost after a generous £25,000 donation.

The ScottishPower Foundation gave the money to the The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice’s Brick by Brick Appeal – which aims to build a new hospice for the people of Glasgow in Bellahouston Park.

Last year, the foundation also gave £25,000, meaning it has doubled the amount it has now given to a total of £50,000 altogether towards the initiative.

The donation will pay for a complementary room in the new hospice, which is expected to open its doors to patients in spring 2018.

Rhona Baillie, The Prince and Princess of Wales hospice’s Chief Executive, said: "Complementary therapies help patients relax, easing their tensions and anxieties.

"This room in the new hospice will help patients come to terms with, and manage, their illness.

"We can’t thank the ScottishPower Foundation enough for all their support, this is a fantastic donation."

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice was founded in 1980 and provides free person-centred and family-focused palliative care and support for more than 1200 patients and families every year.

However due to increasing demand and with the current building at capacity, the decision was taken in 2011 to embark on plans to build a new hospice.

The Brick by Brick appeal, backed by our sister paper the Evening Times, was launched to reach the total of £21 million needed for the building.

Ann Loughrey, trustee and executive officer of the ScottishPower Foundation, said: "We are delighted to be in a position to support The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice as it move ever closer to making the vision of a new hospice a reality.

"Knowing that the funds from the foundation will go directly to supporting patients receiving care aligns to our values of making a real impact in local communities."
