An Edinburgh museum has been recognised as one of the best visitor attractions in the world.

The Writers' Museum has been selected as a winner in this year's TripExpert Experts' Choice Awards, which are based on professional reviews from more than 70 of the top travel guides, magazines and newspapers.

The attraction, managed by the City of Edinburgh Council, allows visitors to discover the city's rare collection of first edition books, personal belongings and portraits of great Scottish writers.

Occupying the historic Lady Stair's House, built in 1622 by Sir William Gray, the museum also features rare work and artefacts celebrating Scottish literature, including Robert Burns's writing desk.

Richard Lewis, the council's culture convener, said: "This listing is based on the recommendations and reviews of some of the most experienced travel writers and journalists in the world.

"It's a fantastic addition to the Writers' Museum's list of accolades and confirms what we in Edinburgh already know - that Edinburgh is one of the best destinations for literature lovers in the world.

"Edinburgh is home to the largest public celebration of the written word in the world, the Edinburgh International Book Festival, in August, while at the Writers' Museum visitors can discover the city's rich writing heritage and Unesco City of Literature status all year round."

The Scott Monument, the Museum of Childhood and the Museum of Edinburgh were also highly rated in TripExpert's 2016 recommendations for the Scottish capital.
