A man is in hospital with serious leg injuries after being shot in Edinburgh.

Police said the attack on the man, who is aged in his 20s, is thought to have been an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public.

Officers found the victim after being called to a disturbance in Cables Wynd, in the Leith area, just after 11pm on Friday.

He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Detective Inspector Alan O'Brien, of Edinburgh CID, said: "An extensive investigation is now under way into this incident. Although this is at an early stage, I'm satisfied this was an isolated attack and there is no ongoing threat to the wider public.

"An area of Cables Wynd is presently cordoned off as our investigation progresses and I thank the local community for their patience and co-operation.

"I can also reassure local residents that we will use every resource at our disposal to trace and arrest anyone involved in this crime as quickly as possible.

"We're pursuing various lines of inquiry, however anyone with information that can assist with the ongoing investigation can contact Police Scotland on 101.
