Tributes have been paid to a young boy who was killed after being hit by a van in Glasgow’s East End.
The five-year-old, who has been named locally as Lennon Toland, was on his way home from school when he was struck by a white transit van on Dalness Street, just after 3pm on Monday afternoon.
The St Paul's pupil was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but later died from his injuries.
An online fundraising page has been setup by a family member to raise money for funeral costs.
Over £4700 has been donated to the page in just 13 hours.
Cousin Ross Clift, who created the GoFundMe page, wrote: “Unfortunately my wee cousin Lennon lost his life today by getting knocked down by a van outside his school.
“At the young age of 5 he just started primary 1 a few weeks ago and obviously hasn't got any insurance to cover funeral costs so I'm setting up this page to help raise money for Leanne, Andrew and my Auntie Karen to give the wee man the best send off possible, fly with the Angels Lennon.
"Rest in Peace wee man”.
Members of the public have taken to social media to pay tribute to the schoolboy.
Angie Rae wrote: "Awwww I'm so sorry to hear this I can't believe how much tragedy 1 family can bear. You're all in my thoughts."
Another added: “So sorry for your loss my 5yr old was killed 12 years ago by an idiot in a car it is every parent’s worst nightmare to bury their child my thoughts are with you all.”
One well-wisher wrote: “I'm so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. It's every parent's worst nightmare, and a tragic accident. The local community is here to support you.”
Natalie McGarry, MP for Glasgow East, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with Lennon Toland's family today after he was tragically killed yesterday afternoon."
Investigations into the accident are continuing.
Officers say the 62-year-old driver of the van was not hurt.
Sergeant Jackie Dunbar, Greater Glasgow Road Policing Unit, Govan, said: "From our enquiries so far, it would appear that the boy, a pupil at St Paul’s (Shettleston) Primary School on Anwoth St, Glasgow, was struck by the van, which had come in to Dalness St from Tollcross Road, as it turned into a car park on Dalness St.
"It was picking up time at the school and there were a number of people in the area at the time of the incident.
"I would ask that anyone who saw what happened, and who has not already been spoken to by police, contact officers at the Road Policing Complex via 101."
A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
