FORMER racing star Susie Wolff has announced that she and her husband, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, are expecting their first baby.

The Oban-born driver made the announcement on Twitter, saying: "Some happy news, a little Wolff is on the way..."

The 33-year-old was the first woman to take part in a grand prix weekend for more than 20 years with a debut Practice One outing at the British GP in 2014.

However last year the driver announced she was retiring from motorsport, saying that she was unlikely to reach its pinnacle and that her aim of racing in Formula One "[wasn't] going to happen".

After being promoted to Williams' test driver for 2015, she was later to be disappointed when overlooked in favour of former Sauber driver Adrian Sutil as reserve.

She said at the time of announcing her retirement: "I got so close and I fought hard. But my gut feeling tells me it is time to move on to explore new challenges."

She lives with her husband, 44, near Lake Constance in Switzerland, and now campaigns to encourage more young female drivers into motorsport.

Though she said that gender discrimination did not play a role in her decision to retire, she has spoken in the past about sexism in the sport.

She was subject to a sexist joke from F1 driver Sergio Perez who said she would "better off the in the kitchen". Wolff later came to the defence of Perez, however he issued an apology for the comment.
