NICOLA Sturgeon will unveil her long-awaited plan to keep Scotland in the European single market after Brexit next week.

The First Minister has pledged to explore all options to keep Scotland in the EU after Scots overwhelmingly rejected Brexit but face being dragged out by Eurosceptics elsewhere in the UK.

Nationalists will be eagerly seeking a date for a second independence referendum, but Sturgeon insists she will only stage a re-run if all of the other options have been exhausted.

The UK Government has pledged to consider Sturgeon’s options carefully but has already described some of the initial suggestions – such as the ‘reverse Greenland’ – as “fanciful”.

The First Minister’s spokesman said: “The paper will be published on Tuesday. You can expect a fair amount of activity around it.”

The spokesman confirmed that Holyrood will be notified in advance of the publication, amid opposition complaints about the SNP allegedly bypassing parliament with its Brexit plans to date.

A UK Government spokeswoman said: “We are determined to get a good deal for all parts of the UK as we leave the EU.

“We look forward to seeing proposals from the Scottish Government and will consider them carefully.”

Labour Europe spokesman Lewis Macdonald said: “We have been calling from full transparency from the Nationalists for months and we will scrutinise their plans when they are finally produced.”
