THE girlfriend of a man who was killed in a deliberate fire was pulled from the targeted blaze by the murder victim’s father.

A chief murder detective revealed the heroics of David Logan, along with the help of neighbours, who managed to rescue Rebecca Williams from the blaze at his home address in Achray Place on New Year’s Day.

The 24-year-old reporter for Capital remains in a critical condition at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

David and his wife Cathy, both 54, suffered smoke inhalation.

The Herald:

Their youngest of two sons, Cameron Logan, 23, and their pet dog, Gomez, were found dead at the scene after a fire was started deliberately at the family home in Milngavie.

Detective chief inspector Paul Livingstone said: “When the alarm was raised, neighbours came to the assistance of the family.

“They were heroic in their actions and, along with the father of the household, they managed to remove Cameron’s girlfriend from the house, which has undoubtedly saved her life.”

Police described the attack as “horrific and spiteful” and said there was no reason to suggest the wrong house was targeted.

Officers also want to trace the owners of a dark coloured car which was parked at a layby on Craigton Road around the same time the incident took place.

The car’s engine was on with the passenger door open on the road next to Craigton Woods, which lies behind the family home.

Extensive searches were carried out up and down Craigton Road as well as the woods yesterday afternoon and the night before.

A flank of police officers raked through foliage along the area.

DCI Paul Livingstone said: “Specialist officers have been drafted in to assist with the investigation into this horrific and spiteful attack which has left a young man dead and a young woman fighting for her life in hospital.

“A joint investigation with the fire service to establish the exact cause of the blaze is continuing, however I can confirm that it was a deliberate act and that there is no information to suggest the wrong house was targeted.

“At this time it is unclear who the intended victim or victims were and we must keep an open mind and investigate all possibilities.

“In particular I would like to trace the occupants of a dark coloured car, which was parked in a lay-by on Craigton Road near to Clober Golf Club around the time the incident occurred.

“If this is your car, or if you have any information about who the car belongs to, then please get in touch.”

The inspector that it is critical people who were in the area between 6.30am and 8.30am on New Year’s Day must give whatever information they can to the police. He added: “Whoever is responsible for this despicable crime does not deserve to be protected.”
