A former Scottish Labour MP is hoping to stage a comeback at Westminster after throwing his hat in the ring for the Copeland by-election.

Thomas Docherty, the former MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, grew up in the constituency in Cumbria.

The election has been triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Jamie Reed.

But Labour faces a battle to hold the seat, which voted for Brexit.

Mr Docherty, who is vying to be Labour's candidate in the by-election, is understood to have the support of a number of local councillors.
