IT has been opened by the Queen while over in New York and it has also been carried out by those such as Darth Vadar and tennis star Anna Kournikova.

But today, the leader of Aberdeen City Council will follow in their footsteps by officially opening trading on the London Stock Exchange.

Councillor Jenny Laing has been invited to do the honours to mark the first venture into capital markets by any Scottish local authority.

Aberdeen announced in November that it had secured the successful pricing of index-linked bonds worth about £370 million to be used to secure future investment in the city. The privilege is often given to companies to mark their first day of having shares traded.

The ability to issue the municipal bond was made possible after Aberdeen was given a credit rating.

Leading agency Moody’s gave the council a credit score of Aa2 – one level below the UK as a whole.
