A man was shot in a "targeted attack" outside a Glasgow primary school is understood to be former gangland murder accused Ross Monaghan.

It is understood the 35-year-old was gunned down outside St George's RC Primary School on Muirdykes Road at approximately 9am this morning.

Several eyewitnesses at the scene said a man had been shot in the back and police have now confirmed a 35-year-old man is in hospital where his condition has been described as stable.

One witness said a parent stepped in to assist the injured man and drove him to hospital.

Local resident Claire Walsh, 41, said: "My neighbour heard the shooting as the kids were going in to the school.
"There was a lot of screaming and panic."

Mohammad Almfauani, 33, was taking his two daughters, Renas and Enas, to St George's RC Primary School in Glasgow for their first day.

"I saw the guy shooting the other, it was so loud. I knew then that it was real.

"The guy ran up the opposite end of the street from me and I thought I saw him put the gun away but I can't say for sure.

"I shouted for help for someone to try and stop the guy. I would have chased him but I did not want my kids to see this.

"I took my kids straight home and told them that they will be starting school tomorrow."

Chief Inspector Simon Jeacocke said: "This is a highly unusual incident and understandably, parents, staff, pupils and people in the local community are all very alarmed by this.

"We do believe it was a targeted attack but nonetheless this took place near to a local primary school at the start of the school day, when the area was busy with parents dropping off their children.

"Although it would appear that there was an intended victim, anyone could have been injured as a result, putting young children and innocent people at risk.

Ross Monaghan was acquitted of murdering gangland figure Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll in Asda Robroyston carpark in 2010.

He denied shooting the 29-year-old and was acquitted at Glasgow High Court in 2012.
