IT IS the largest onshore wind farm in Europe enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors in all weathers.

Now Whitelee Wind Farm owner ScottishPower Renewables has unveiled the winner of a national competition that gave photographers the chance to win a digital camera by entering their best pictures of the site near Glasgow.

More than 350 people entered, submitting a range of “awe-inspiring” images in snow, sun and darkness.

The winner was Phyllis Buchanan, from Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire, for her entry that featured her seven-year-old daughter Amaia.

She said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won, especially as my daughter Amaia is the star of the shot. She’s been telling all her friends she’s famous.

“We love going up to Whitelee as a family. It’s a beautiful part of the country and the kids just love it. We take pictures every week so it’s brilliant to say they’re now competition-worthy. It’s certainly a surprise.”

Whitelee is the most visited on-shore wind farm in the UK, with more than 500,000 people entering its visitor centre since 2009.

Visitor centre manager Andrea McFetridge said: “All the entries captured the wind farm in an awe-inspiring way. I feel very lucky to be able to come to work each day at somewhere as picturesque as Whitelee Wind Farm.”
