Just seven boys were called Donald in Scotland last year as President Trump's first name lost its appeal.

Like many traditional names, Donald has been increasingly unpopular in recent years, according to data from National Records of Scotland.

But experts believe Mr Trump's divisive politics have put off even more people. Carole Hough, professor of onomastics at Glasgow University, told Scotland on Sunday Donald was declining faster than Patrick and Charles. She said: "It seems Trump has accelerated the decline."

Mr Trump was named after his Scottish grandfather, Donald Smith. Former Edinburgh council leader Donald Anderson responded: "We need a character in Game of Thrones to make it popular again."

There were 127 Donalds named in 1977 and numbers have averaged at around 20 a year since the turn of the century. The name is ranked 442nd, alongside Che, Eden and Lomond.
