HOLYROOD'S youngest MSP Ross Greer has revealed he could leave politics in future to become a Church of Scotland minister.

Speaking to the Sunday Herald's interview series People Behind the Power Greer, a committed Christian, said becoming a kirk minister could be “an option” for him at some stage in his future life – but only if he gets the chance to play a role in winning independence and helping to found a new Scottish state.

Greer, a member of Bearsden Cross Kirk, set out what would be an unprecedented modern example of a UK parliamentarian, quitting frontline politics to go into full-time religion.

The MSP, who was elected to Holyrood at the age of 21 last May, said: "People in my church joke all the time that I should be a minister, but I believe I can do more good and that there's more I can contribute and correspond to my faith by being an MSP now."

However, Greer said he would only consider entering the ministry if he had the opportunity to play his part in winning independence and contributing to political life after a referendum.

He added: "I'd certainly consider it, but I'm quite happy where I am now.

"I'm aware that it's an option."
