TOMAS Cerny, the Partick Thistle goalkeeper whose saves in the 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday kept the scoreline respectable for his side, has vowed the Firhill club won't switch off after securing a top six place.
Alan Archibald's side finished in the top half of the Ladbrokes Premiership table for the first time in the 2016/17 campaign - six points ahead of Kilmarnock in seventh spot.
However, their display against their city rivals at the weekend fell, even taking into account the injury problems which their manager Archibald had to contend with last week, way below their expected standard.
But Cerny, the Czech goalkeeper who has been a first team regular since recovering from a foot injury in December, has stressed to his team mates the importance of performing well in their remaining fixtures.
“I made four really good saves to keep the score down to 2-0 on Saturday, but that didn’t take the disappointment from the performance of the team," he said.
“We were a really good run before this game, eight games without losing, and we felt confident we could play well here. I don’t know whether securing the top-six spot last week made us too relaxed.
“That could have gone either way. We could have been really relaxed and played really good football and caused Rangers problems - or we could have been relaxed and put in a performance that wasn’t good enough. Unfortunately, it was the latter."
Cerny added: “We have to give 100 per cent from now on. We don’t want to throw away the really good and hard work we’ve put into the season. It’s been an amazing season in terms of finishing in the top six, that’s a big thing for the club.
“We realise the games we’re coming into will be really hard and if we play the way we did at Ibrox I don’t think we’ve got much chance to be successful in those games.
“So we need to regroup and come back stronger and try to put in the best performances we can for the rest of the season.
“You only enjoy football if you play well and ideally get results. If your performances are not good enough then you are not going to enjoy them and you’re going to be disappointed.
“So it’s important for us to regroup. We played at Ibrox and that’s a hard place to come, we know we can play much better and we need to try to in the upcoming games because they will all be really tough.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
