A NEW £6.5 million Premier Inn for the ski resort of Aviemore has been approved in a boost for the area’s tourism.

The 60-bed hotel will bring much needed extra accommodation to the town and also 25 new jobs.

The project won the backing of the Cairngorms National Park Authority’s planning committee in Ballater today.

It will go ahead in the town’s south end, on the site of a long since demolished former service station on Grampian Road.

Planning officer Karen Donnachie said in a report it will provide “further facilities for visitors to the area thus supporting its economic prosperity.”

The report added: “Whilst the building is large, representing the limit to what can reasonably be accommodated on the site, the design, detailing and landscaping are of a good quality which will enable it to help enhance the landscape character of this approach into Aviemore over time.”

Nicholas Johnston, acquisitions manager for Premier Inn, said: “Aviemore is a brilliant location and gateway for many into the Cairngorms.”

He said it would bring more choice for customers and regenerate a derelict site, delivering “significant investment and year-round jobs to the local area.”
