Great Britain head coach Pete Russell has hailed the gold medal win in the IIHF World Championships as the "biggest moment of his career."

The national team ended a great week in Belfast with a 4-0 shutout victory over rivals Japan to secure glory as GB gained promotion to the second tier.

And Scotsman Russell, who will coach in the Elite League next season with Milton Keynes Lightning, couldn't hide his pride as his team were promoted to Division 1A.

“This is the biggest moment of my career and a fantastic feeling. To do it on home ice in front of so many fantastic supporters really is amazing,” he beamed. “Those boys deserve it. They were so focused all week and nothing fazed them. I thought we were so good tonight from the first whistle and you could tell they were up for it. I am so proud of every one of them and they deserve the promotion."

Russell’s men sealed the Division 1B tournament with a 4-0 victory over Japan to finish the job on a successful week where GB won five out of five.

Robert Dowd, Fife Flyers’ Brendan Brooks and two from Matthew Myers scored the goals on the night that sealed a gold medal win for the Brits in the end.
