PATRICK McNally (Letters, May 22) suggests that the Advertising Standards Authority should conduct an independent review of party manifestos for accuracy.

Since 1999, the ASA no longer regulates political non-broadcast advertising and the reasons for that is explained on our website (www.asa.org.uk).

This means we don’t have a remit to review party manifestos, or posters, or claims made online, and so on. Political advertising in broadcast is already banned, but there are dedicated party political broadcasts slots which are not classified as advertisements.
