MRS Y Sim (Letters, May 26) talks of attending Die Fledermaus and of her disappointment at it containing "strong language and adult themes". I quite like some opera – I went to see Madame Butterfly once: spoiler alert: a wumman kills herself at the end. Can't get any more “adult themed” than that.

As to her disgruntled friends, enraged by their exposure to this horrific experience? If they're no longer speaking to her – they were never her friends in the first place.

I HAVE been in the audience in many different opera houses, many productions have been wonderful, some absolutely dreadful, but the recent Conservatoire offering is only one where the customers left chortling (Letters, May 24, 25 & 26). We were in a party of 15, some of whom had never been to an opera. The general view was "I didn't know opera could be such fun!"

Die Fledermaus was written to be fun, frivolous and topical. The Conservatoire production was all of that. I look forward to the next one.
