I LIKE this picture just for the look on this girl’s face. The tableau was created by my old chum and photographer John Young who was sent along in 1988 to record the demise of Possilpark City Farm.

Pupils from Westercommon Primary School volunteered to rescue some of the flowers from the farm’s wildlife garden and replant them outside Possilpark People’s Hall.

Classmates Claire McRoberts and Alexander Pickering, both aged 11, were amongst those taking part in the replanting, and John has created this scene where Alexander is taking a breather and Claire is not happy.

Eleven years old and already she has got the look down to a tee when males let you down.

She may well be using it to this day.

Possilpark in the north of the city was the scene of extensive council house building in the thirties and forties, to replace crumbling tenements in the city centre, but unfortunately the heavy industries in the area began to close down in the fifties leading to heavy unemployment in Possilpark and a consequent increase in social problems and crime.

There has been some demolition of the more run-down houses, and an attempt to create smaller local businesses. Claire’s primary school closed a few years after the picture was taken and was burned down in an arson attack.
