A MAN arrested for allegedly threatening to kill Hibernian manager Neil Lennon was rushed to hospital ahead of a court appearance.

Sean Cowan, 54, was arrested on Tuesday over death threats he is said to have made to the former Celtic boss following the Edinburgh club’s 3-2 win over Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday.

Mr Cowan, of Johnstone, Renfrewshire, was held in police custody overnight at Greenock police office ahead of an expected appearance at Paisley Sheriff Court to be charged over his alleged comments. He was due to appear before Sheriff Susan Sinclair for the first court hearing in connection with the case.

But Mr Cowan, instead of appearing in the dock at the town’s court, was in a ward in the town’s Royal Alexandra Hospital.

It is unclear why he was taken to the Renfrewshire hospital but court insiders insist it shows there are serious concerns for his health.

One said: “If it was something run of the mill then you would expect a Police Casualty Surgeon, a GP that works with the police, to be called out.

“The fact he was taken to hospital shows there was something they thought needed treated or checked out urgently.”

A spokesman for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received a report concerning a 54-year old in relation to an alleged incident on August 15, 2017, at Paisley.

“The report remains under the consideration of the Procurator Fiscal.”

Mr Cowan was arrested over alleged social media posts threatening to kill Mr Lennon, 45.

The manger had been the subject of a probe over his goal celebrations in Saturday’s win.

But police later confirmed the former Celtic captain will not face any action. He was being investigated after Rangers fans were “outraged” by his behaviour.
