GLASGOW has been City of Culture, Architecture and Design, Music, Science and so. I am afraid our city has slipped from its pedestal and has reached an all-time low in hosting Jurassic Kingdom in the Botanic Garden.

We are very privileged to live beside the garden, close to the roaring dinosaurs and the constant noise is unbearable, not to mention the burger bars and ice cream stalls blotting the landscape. A glance at social media will reveal that I am not alone in finding the show less than satisfactory.

This, however, is not my principal concern. It is that the council would have allowed such an event to happen in the gardens in this, its 150th year. I understand the necessity of raising funds for the city coffers but surely a degree of selectivity in where and why such “attractions” are located should be more carefully considered.

I have it on good authority that the council's strategic intention is to make parks into “entertainment venues” rather than the open green spaces for which the city is rightly famed.

I am aware I sound like a Nimby, but if such a tawdry affair can happen in my backyard today it looks like it will be happening in yours tomorrow.
