SCOTLAND’S Dan Travers collected another gold medal over the weekend, winning the 60+ men’s singles title at the World Senior Championships in Cochin, India.
Travers has previously won a host of accolades at Masters level, including 2013 World Senior singles and mixed doubles gold as well as men’s singles silver and mixed doubles gold at last year’s European Senior Championships.
In India, he added to his ever growing collection of titles by coming from a game behind in the final to take a mammoth 13-21 21-16 26-24 win over Sri Lanka’s second seed Arnold Dendeng.
It was the second three-game singles match for the Scot in two days, as the top seed had beaten Malaysian Wan Seong Chan 21-11 22-24 21-10 in the semi-finals.
Travers and partner Christine Black were also top seeds in mixed doubles, but Travers’ exertions in the singles had taken its toll and the pair withdrew whilst trailing 21-15 5-3 to England’s Ian Purton and Christine Crossley, having reached the final without dropping a game.
Black, who is also no stranger to success at Masters level, went into the women’s doubles as reigning champion having won the title with Dutch partner Marjan Ridder in Helsingborg in 2015.
This time around she teamed up with Crossley but, despite winning the first game, the top seeds lost out in the final to second seeded Japanese pair Sugako Morita and Sayoko Takebayashi 22-24 21-18 21-14.
Black ended up having to settle for a hat-trick of silver medals, justifying her seeding in the 60+ women’s singles by reaching the final before another defeat to Crossley ended her title hopes.
