THE Scottish MP branded a “Brexit mutineer” has revealed some of the hate mail he has received since.

East Renfrewshire Tory Paul Masterton posted a picture online of a Christmas card defaced with the words “Judas” and “traitor”.

Releasing the image through Twitter, he said: “I feel bad for the trees who died in vain to make this card."

The card’s original message of Happy Christmas was altered to read “Brexit Christmas”.

Addressed “To Judas”, it included the ungrammatical message: “17.5 million 52% voted leave. Pack your suitcase. Leave the UK. And don’t return. Ever. You:- Traitor.”

Mr Masterton was among 15 Tory MPs vilified by the Daily Telegraph last week over Brexit.

They said they would vote against the UK Government plan to enshrine the exact day and hour of Brexit in law as they feared it could weaken the UK’s negotiating hand with the EU.

Former Tory minister Anna Soubry, who was one of the MPs pictured on the newspaper’s front page, has since blamed the coverage for her office receiving 13 death threats.

The Remain supporter said on Sunday that she had been “really quite frightened”.

The paper’s editor has defended the “legitimate actions and language of a free press”.

Mr Masterton last week strongly defended his stance in a letter to Tory party members in East Renfrewshire, which voted 3 to 1 for Remain last year, .

He said the Government’s plan to amend the EU (Withdrawal) Bill to include 11pm on 29 March 2019 as the exact moment of Brexit was wrong and possibly harmful.

He said: “This is not a question of if we leave the EU, or even when, those things are settled. It is a question of how.

“It is my firm view that placing the date and time of exit on the face of the Withdrawal Bill would severely weaken and undermine the Government’s negotiating position.”

Denying he wanted to derail the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, he went on: “Brexit is happening and I have absolutely no interest in blocking or delaying it.

“We only get one opportunity, one chance, to do this - I just want us to get it right.”
