The Royal Albert Hall was turned into a fortress from a galaxy far, far away as stars descended for the premiere of the Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

Guests including the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry were flanked by ushers dressed as the movie's imperial stormtroopers as they made their way up the red carpet, to be greeted by a working BB8 droid from the film.

The premiere, hosted in aid of The Royal Foundation, saw the film’s cast, including Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson and Daisy Ridley mixing with royals such as the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Other celebrities hitting the red carpet included Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli, actor Danny Devito and singer Myleene Klass.

While popular Star Wars companion, Anthony Daniels, better known as C3-PO, also attended.

Hamill, who returns as Luke Skywalker, said: “You never get used to this kind of passion and enthusiasm, it’s just wonderful, the fans have been so supportive over the years, their enthusiasm is infectious.”

Director Rian Johnson said during a live video stream from the red carpet that he was excited for fans to see the film.

Domhnall Gleeson paid tribute to late actress Carrie Fisher, (who played Princess Leia), who died almost a year ago.

He said: “She will be missed. It is a really amazing tribute to her talent. And we remember her as a person away from that.”

Ridley (Rey) promised fans a “fun and emotional journey” in the latest instalment of the hit sci-fi franchise.

An excited Boyega (Finn) introduced his parents to the crowd and said: “This is crazy, you lot, thank you so much, the love is appreciated.” His father said that the pair were “very proud of him”.

Boyega has previously said that Prince Harry and his brother Prince William have cameos in the new film wearing stormtrooper armour, after they were given a tour of Pinewood Studios while it was being filmed.
