A key Conservative powerbroker and a Game of Thrones actor will be among those honoured at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Sir Graham Brady, regarded as the voice of the party's backbench MPs at Westminster because of his role as chairman of the 1922 Committee, will be knighted.

The Altrincham and Sale West MP's award, one of a number given to members of the Tory group in the New Year Honours, saw claims of cronyism levelled at Prime Minister Theresa May.

Sir Graham, who was elected chairman of the committee in 2010, is listened to closely by the leadership and would play a crucial role in any future leadership contest, which would be triggered if 15% of the party's MPs - 48 at present - write to him requesting one.

Meanwhile, veteran Scots actor James Cosmo, known to Game of Thrones fans as Jeor Mormont, will go beyond the palace wall collect his MBE for services to drama.

He has also starred in films including Braveheart, Trainspotting and Highlander and was one of the housemates in Celebrity Big Brother in 2017.

Cosmo - father to two sons with his wife Annie - has described himself as "contrarian, autodidact and fat".

Other attendees include the playwright John Godber, a miner's son and former teacher whose stage hits include Bouncers and Lucky Sods, and conductor David Temple.

Godber, who in 2000 had to stand in in one of his musicals at Hull Truck Theatre after the leading lady fell ill, will collect an OBE for services to the arts.

And Temple, the co-founder of Crouch End Festival Chorus who has collaborated with Noel Gallagher, Sir Ray Davies and Hans Zimmer, will receive his MBE for services to music.
