A MOTORIST is fighting for his life after falling victim to a drive-by shooting by a balaclava-clad gunman in Glasgow.

The 29-year-old, named locally as Kenny Reilly, was shot through a car window while stopped at traffic lights on Bilsland Drive, near to Maryhill Road, in Ruchill on Monday.

The attacker, who was wearing a balaclava, got out of the passenger side of a black car and shot his victim, who was in the passenger side of a silver BMW.

He then got back into the car and sped off in the direction of Maryhill Road.

A black people carrier was found burnt out at Craigieburn Gardens a short time later which is thought to be linked to the crime.

The victim was found with serious injuries at around 10.30pm and taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where his condition is described as critical.

The incident is being treated as a targeted attempted murder by investigators.

Detective Superintendent Kenny Graham of Greater Glasgow Division said: “Whoever is responsible for this shooting clearly has no regard for the safety of those living in this busy residential area, and they must be caught.

“We are continuing our enquiries today to establish a motive for this crime, and although we believe that this was a targeted attack and that the 29 year-old man was the intended victim, we are pursuing all lines of enquiry.

“Extensive forensic examinations are ongoing in both Bilsland Drive and Craigieburn Gardens where the burnt-out vehicle was found.

“Officers are pursuing all lines of enquiry, however we do need the help and support of the local community.”

Investigating officers scaled the surrounding streets for clues while a Police Scotland helicopter searched for possible suspects in the wider North Glasgow area.

One resident living on nearby Sandfield Street said she heard a loud bang and a number of sirens around 10pm.

Local businesses were put on lockdown as investigations continued into Tuesday morning.

Ramsay & Co, Solicitors and Soapbox Design and Print on Maryhill Road were among those forced to close to make way for forensics.

The spokeswoman for Soapbox Design and Print said: “We’re not sure what’s going to happen.

“We’ve been told to call up tomorrow to see if we’re okay to open so I’m working elsewhere.

“The street still appears to be shut off so we’ll just have to take it day-by-day.”

Businesses have been left in the dark over when they will be able to operate as normal following the incident.

Workers and school pupils were also affected by travel disruption after police closed Maryhill Road between Ruchill Street and Hinshaw Street, and Garscube Road.

High visibility patrols are being carried out in the area while an incident caravan is due to be set up in the vicinity to reassure residents.

The incident is the seventh shooting on city streets in less than two years after Euan Johnston, 26, was shot and killed in Shields Road in December 2016.

In January 2017, Ross Monaghan was shot at near a school on Muirdyke Road, and Ross Craig, 34, was shot in the leg in June that year on Shawhill Road.

A 22-year-old was shot and killed in a gang fight in Castlemilk in July 2017, and Paul McColl was shot in the face and stomach in February this year.

The last victim was William Barclay, 26, who was shot at near Springburn in March.

Councillor Allan Gow said he was “shocked and saddened” by the violence on Bilsland Drive.

He said: “I have spoken with Police Commanders who will have additional resources and patrols deployed locally to provide reassurance.

“This was a targeted attack, which took place in a community where great strides have been taken over many years to bring crime down, and I would encourage anyone with any information to contact the police or use the Crimestoppers line.”

Annie Wells MSP added: “This is a very serious incident as to which investigations are still in their early stages.

“We all want our communities to feel safe and I’m sure local people are shocked right now.

“I hope that in due course we will know what the root of this incident was but right now we need to let investigations take their course.”

Investigations into the incident are due to be ongoing for a number of days.

A spokesman from the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 10.32pm on Monday April 16 to attend an incident on Bilsland Drive, Maryhill.

“We dispatched one ambulance, a paramedic response unit and our special operations team to the scene.

“One male patient was transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.”
