HOUSING bosses have banned pensioners from throwing parties at a sheltered complex.

They are refusing to budge on demands for a return of dancing in the day-room after a noise complaint during a birthday party almost 18 months ago from one of the 40 residents at Hazeldean in Galashiels, Selkirkshire.

Police were also called to one of the early-evening knees-ups while Scottish Borders Council’s environmental health officers were brought in to monitor volume levels at functions.

But residents are now calling for owners Scottish Borders Housing Association to allow music at the flatted complex in the town’s Windyknowe Road.

Following last year’s complaint, housing officers held meetings with residents which resulted in an immediate ban on all amplified entertainment.

A spokeswoman said: “SBHA recognises the significant social, emotional and psychological benefits music can bring which is why when we were approached by a resident last year advising they were being disturbed by the loud music from some events, evidenced by Environmental Health readings to be above acceptable noise levels, we met with all tenants to agree an amicable solution.

“Since then we have continued to regularly meet with tenants at Hazeldean and have received no further complaint in relation to this.”

But the bored pensioners have now decided to fight for their right to party.

They have launched a Facebook campaign and petition.
