A 20-YEAR-OLD Richmond man has been jailed for life for his part in the death of a young surgeon who fell 30ft from a second floor window onto the concrete below.

Dean Chesters, of Sheen Road, was sentenced to life imprisonment last Friday for the manslaughter of Owen Daniel Smith.

A jury at Exeter Crown Court heard that Dr Smith, an ear nose and throat specialist at Exeter General Hospital died in November 2000 after Chesters found him naked in bed with one of his mother's friends.

The court was told that Dr Smith had climbed out of a bathroom window in a bid to escape Chesters but had tripped and fallen.

Sentencing Judge Geoffrey Rivlin, QC, said that Chesters was a danger to the public.

DCI Guy Ferguson said: "My thoughts are with the Smith family, they've lost a wonderful son. I hope that today's sentence offers them some comfort.

"This was an appalling crime arising from an unprovoked and apparently motiveless attack. The sentence today reflects this.

"Dean Chesters is an extremely violent and aggressive young man from which society needs protecting."
