Hendon, lying second, inflicted Chess Valley's first defeat of the season on Saturday, and narrowed the gap behind the leaders to four points, with a game in hand.

In a nail-biting finish, Hendon's tenacious tackling and rearguard action earned them revenge for an earlier loss.

The back three in the scrum, Peter Love, Ricky Patten and Goss Mutuma were everywhere supporting man of the match scrum-half John Diviney.

Hendon kicked three penalties for a 9-0 lead, before Chess Valley replied with two.

Hendon coach John Brown praised the youngsters in the team. "Ten of them were colts last season today they came of age in senior rugby."
