THE husband of former Clyde 1 DJ Suzie McGuire vandalised her car because he was distraught at reading in a newspaper she had an affair, a court has heard.

The father-in-law Robert Mitchell, 64, fought back tears when he was questioned about an article that was in the News of the World newspaper in April 2010.

He said he felt sorry for his son Derek, 35, who he believed was responsible for almost £5,000 of damage to Ms McGuire's Audi.

Defence lawyer Billy Lavelle asked the witness: "On the face of it this was a story about Suzie McGuire cheating on your son in a national newspaper?" He replied: "Yes." Mr Lavelle asked: "With a footballer?" Mr Mitchell said: "Yes."

The lawyer continued: "And your son was distraught about it?" Mr Mitchell answered: "There was no doubt he was distraught."

Mr Mitchell said there were issues with alcohol for both his son and Ms McGuire and claimed that on a weekend away last July in Arran she "just sat at the bar" while her children were watched by others.

The court also heard from a friend of Ms McGuire, Nicole Weaver, who told of an event at 29 private members club in Glasgow at which Mitchell allegedly slapped and bit his wife.

Mitchell is on trial at Paisley Sheriff Court accused of committing a string of offences between March 2009 and October 2013 including assaults and breaches of the peace.

Makeup artist Ms Weaver told the court she saw Mitchell attack Ms McGuire at the event in December 2011. She claimed she saw Mitchell lunge towards her and carry out what she thought was a headbutt but turned out to be a bite.

It was put to her that Mitchell was put out of the event because he was drunk, but Ms Weaver said "He was taken out because he attacked Suzie."

Mitchell denies the charges and the trial continues.
