DAVE Lee Travis is the third celebrity scalp to be claimed by high-profile sex crime inquiry Operation Yewtree.

The 69-year-old was the fourth figure to be arrested as part of the investigation, which has seen 17 people questioned by police.

Scotland Yard had faced questions over the success of the probe, which has produced three convictions - veteran entertainer Rolf Harris and PR guru Max Clifford are both serving prison sentences for a string of indecent assaults.

The investigation was launched in the wake of claims made against late DJ Jimmy Savile. He was exposed as one of the most prolific sex offenders in British history by an ITV documentary team.

The revelations and subsequent police investigation led to separate allegations against other household names. Eight people - including comedians Jim Davidson and Freddie Starr - have been told no further action will be taken. Another three, including broadcaster Paul Gambaccini, remain on police bail.

The other six have been charged. As well as the three convictions, former pop star Gary Glitter and ex-Radio One DJ Chris Denning are facing prosecution in separate cases. Driver David Smith was due to face trial but died before he could do so.

Scotland Yard has defended Operation Yewtree, saying officers have to take alleged victims seriously, particularly in the wake of national failings over Savile.

Travis was the first to go through a trial under the investigation. The proceedings ended with acquittal on 12 indecent assault charges, and a hung jury on one count of the same charge and a count of sexual assault. Prosecutors later confirmed they would go to a retrial, which led to yesterday's conviction on one count of indecent assault.
