A FIRE commander who battered a former SPL goalie with a baseball bat when he discovered the player had been having an affair with his wife has been ordered to pay £1000 compensation to his victim.

Mark Newton, 36, attacked former Hearts and Falkirk keeper Myles Hogarth, 38, at Camelon Juniors' ground in Falkirk, on May 21 last year. Mr Hogarth was left with a bruised back and a scar on his face.

Newton, a crew commander with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in the training division at Falkirk, was sentenced yesterday at Falkirk Sheriff Court, which heard that Mr Hogarth had written a letter pleading for mercy.
