Detectives have renewed their appeal to trace a burgundy car spotted close to where a man was found dying.

Officers investigating the murder of Albert McDonald, a known gangland enforcer in Riddrie, Glasgow, previously thought they had tracked down the vehicle.

But after speaking to the occupants, they discovered it was not the vehicle.

Mr McDonald, 58, from Glasgow, was found with head injuries in Cumbernauld Road at 9.25pm on Monday.

He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary but died on the way to hospital.

Detectives are examining Mr McDonald's links to crime. He reportedly had close links to Martin Hamilton, who jailed in 2000 for drugs, abduction, assault and torture. Hamilton recently absconded and is still being sought by police.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura McLuckie, said: "The response from the public following our appeal has been good, and we had thought we'd traced the correct vehicle.

"However, this is not the case.

"So I'd like to reinforce my appeal to trace a small burgundy car seen nearby in Cumbernauld Road around 9.25pm on Monday June 15."

Officers are still working to establish the victim's last known movements.

They said he was drinking in The Snug Bar in Duke Street and would like to establish how he was found on Cumbernauld Road.

Det Ch Insp McLuckie added: "We really need people who were nearby and who may have seen Albert in the area to come forward.

"Please do not think that the information you have is not relevant, please let the inquiry team be the judge of that - your information may be critical.

"A dedicated team of officers are working around the clock on this inquiry.

"We really need the help of the public in tracing who is responsible for Albert's death."
