Car thief jailed for wedding day crime

A MAN who stole a car while its owner attended a wedding, before drunkenly crashing it, was yesterday jailed and banned from the road for life.

John Copeland racked up his 12th conviction for driving while disqualified and his fourth for drink driving during the incident in Kirkcaldy last month.

Twice in the two months before the incident he had avoided jail on other charges – instead being handed community payback orders.

Copeland was on bail when he stole the car, which was unlocked, on July 13.

Three days later he smashed it in the Fife town's Links Street, before being spotted staggering away from the scene.

Fiscal depute Claire Millar told Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court: "After the wedding, parties returned to the car and it became apparent it had been stolen."

Copeland, 35, of Burntisland, Fife, pled guilty to theft, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and drink driving.
