The daughter of the woman who suffered fatal slash wounds in a hotel room has also died from her injuries.

Nicola McDonough died in hospital yesterday evening, three days after being found wounded and slumped in the corridor of the Premier Inn in Greenock.

Her mother, Margaret, 52, was then discovered in a room in the hotel and died from her injuries in hospital on Friday shortly afterwards.

Earlier, police confirmed they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the death of Mrs McDonough, the mother of four other children.

Detectives had been waiting to interview her daughter, a care worker and recent social work graduate, in connection with the death of her mother but her condition had been too poor to do so.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said last night that a report will be sent to the procurator-fiscal in connection with the death of the 23-year-old woman.

The investigation into the death of her mother remains open.

Police yesterday clarified that the two women had suffered slash wounds and dismissed reports they had been stabbed.

An element of suicide has not been ruled out, with an officer saying yesterday that "whatever happened, happened between the two women only".

Officers have asked any friends of the mother and daughter to share information about the two women and any plans they may have been making. It is not yet clear why they booked into a hotel in Greenock when they lived less than 20 miles away in Paisley.

CCTV images of the pair less than 24 hours before the bloody discovery in the hotel have been released as officers piece together their final movements.

It is known they travelled to Balloch by car last Thursday morning with their red Suzuki Swift now a focal point of the investigation.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff said: "We are keeping an open mind on the circumstances, however, we can confirm we are not looking for any third party at this time. I would urge anyone with information, however insignificant it might seem, to get in touch with police."

Mrs McDonough was a foster carer with Renfrewshire Council and had in the past stood as a Liberal Democrat candidate in local elections. She previously stood for the Johnstone North, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch seat but was defeated by the standing Labour candidate.

It is understood she was separated from her husband, Thomas, who runs a building firm in Blairgowrie. Mr McDonough had been at his daughter's bedside as she fought for her life.

Mr Wagstaff said: "We are still piecing together the last known movements of Margaret and Nicola. Our inquiries have revealed that after last being seen in the Paisley area around 9am on Thursday May 9, both travelled to the Balloch area and we have a sighting of them around 11am that day in Carrochan Road in Balloch.

"Were you in the Balloch area on Thursday morning? Did you see a red Suzuki Swift registration number SL56CBF? You may have information that could assist us."

Police would also like to speak to anyone who seen either of the women or the Suzuki Swift in the Paisley and Greenock on Thursday, May 9, into May 10.

Police said the two women left the hotel shortly after checking in at 3.30pm on Thursday and returned to their room about 12.30am or 1am on Friday. It is not clear where they had gone.

We are keeping an open, however, we can confirm we are not looking for any third party at this time
