A bogus lawyer dubbed the Devil's Advocate raked in an income "worthy of a footballer" by taking on the cases of notorious criminals, a court heard.

Ex-Dundee FC chairman Giovanni Di Stefano, 58, made £3.4 million representing famous names including Saddam Hussein, Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs and rocker Gary Glitter.

The Italian-born fraudster posed as a qualified lawyer for eight years, despite only having an honorary degree from the University of Belgrade.

In March Di Stefano was jailed for 14 years for his 'wicked' con between July 2004 to June 2012, which saw him rake in the equivalent of more than £35,000 a month.

He used "grains of truth to build mountainous lies" to secure "an income worthy of a footballer", prosecutor Patrick Moran told a confiscation hearing at Southwark Crown Court. It was agreed he profited by £3,417,697.25.

Judge Alistair McCreath reserved judgement on the amount Di Stefano must repay until a late date.

Di Stefano was convicted of 29 fraud, money laundering and forgery charges following a trial at the court.
