FORMER radio DJ Suzie McGuire has spoken candidly of her torment at the hands of her estranged husband and of her regret at not acting on police warnings to stay away from him.

"Like so many other battered women, I was too scared to go through with it," she said.

Ms McGuire said she was driven to make a suicide attempt in March 2013 with some paracetamol and a litre bottle of "horrible cheap vodka", after Derek Mitchell had "robbed me of everything - my mind, my heart, my soul".

But her husband found her in her car near a golf course and took her to hospital. She awoke in Hairmyres Hospital's high-dependency unit, and remained in the hospital for 10 days.

In an interview published yesterday, Ms McGuire spoke of her current feelings towards her estranged husband, and of her new interest in helping other battered and abused women.

Mitchell, a 35-year-old accountant, was convicted last week of three assaults on the former Radio Clyde drivetime host.

He was also found guilty of a charge of breach of the peace, but he was cleared of another assault. He will be sentenced next month.

Ms McGuire said that after she had ended their relationship, Mitchell tried to cause her problems through her work at Radio Clyde.

"I knew he would do his worst," she said. "With the court case looming, I went to my boss and told him I had to leave."

Ms McGuire urged battered and abused women to contact police and to keep photographs and notes of their injuries. "There is help out there," she added.
