THE man who led the successful campaign to abolish tolls on the Skye Bridge has been convicted of drink-driving.

Robbie the Pict was stopped with a count of 59 - almost twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - in the village of Kyleakin on the night of June 28, 2009.

He had denied the charge but was convicted by Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen at Portree Sheriff Court.

The 64-year-old, of Broadford, Skye, said he would appeal. He said: "I was wrongfully arrested on the pier at Kyleakin, which is private ground. And had an unlawful breath tester used to launch a wrongful prosecution. Of course this must go to the appeal court.

"What has been going on behind the scenes in my case is bad law and, like road or bridge tolls and speed cameras, mostly about corruptly generating money."
