Masked intruders have escaped with jewellery and cash after raiding a family home.

The robbers threatened the family with a weapon and demanded cash before fleeing with jewellery and a four-figure sum of money.

Police described the ordeal as a "terrifying experience" for the occupants and said they have stepped up patrols in the area of Edinburgh where the robbery took place.

The gang, all men wearing dark clothing and masks, raided the house in Crewe Road South, beside Fettes College, just before 2am yesterday.

The occupants were assaulted and held within their home while the robbers stole the cash and jewellery.

Police are carrying out inquiries in the area and have increased high-visibility patrols.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Houston said: "The occupants of the house were awoken in the night to four masked intruders, who threatened them with a weapon and demanded cash.

"This was obviously a terrifying experience for them and we are looking for any information to help us trace those responsible.

"I would be particularly keen to trace the drivers or occupants of any vehicles that were within the area at the time of the incident.

"We don't have a clear description of the men, as they were wearing masks and dark clothing."
