A hunter fought back tears as a sheriff confiscated a rifle that was a present from his dying father.

Belgian Jean-Pierre Robinet, 44, , owner of the 'remotest pub in the UK mainland' had admitted having a rifle, shotgun and 60 bullets without having valid licences for the guns and ammunition.

Robinet had a licence to use the firearms in his native country and thought his European pass allowed him to hunt deer in Scotland.

His lawyer claimed at Fort William Sheriff Court it was a 'technical' offence.

However, Sheriff Richard Davidson heard this pass only allowed him to hunt as a visiting tourist.

And when 18 months ago he bought and started to run the Old Forge Bar in Knoydart,West Inverness-shire, he became a permanent resident, not a tourist, and required Scottish police-issued licences for the guns.

Fiscal Andrew Hanton said police, "acting on information", raided the Old Forge on May 27 while the owner was away and discovered the two weapons in an unlocked gun cabinet.
