Philip Muirhead, 36, jetted off to Cuba and bought himself a car after swindling the cash from pensioners he met through his work.
He admitted 10 charges of theft when he appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court in April and was released on bail to await sentencing.
But he absconded to Edinburgh and hatched a plan to kill himself at the Forth Road Bridge, Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard yesterday. He was found earlier this month and arrested.
Sheriff William Summers said any discount for Muirhead's early plea would be reduced because he went on the run. He sentenced him to 30 months in jail, backdated to October 4 when he was first remanded in custody.
