A SCOT accused of biting off part of Casualty actor Clive Mantle's ear has appeared in court.

Philip McGilvray, 32, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court charged with wounding with intent.

The alleged attack occurred during an incident in a Travelodge in Forster Street on Newcastle's Quayside in March.

Mantle, 55, was appearing at the city's Theatre Royal in a touring production of The Ladykillers.

He is best known for playing Little John in Robin of Sherwood and for his role as surgeon Mike Barratt in BBC medical dramas Casualty and Holby City.

He also appeared as Greatjon Umber in the hit US show Game Of Thrones.

McGilvray was granted bail and a trial date has been set for July 29.
