THE estranged husband of former Clyde 1 DJ Suzie McGuire has been branded violent and destructive by a prosecutor.

Derek Mitchell, 35, is on trial accused of breaching the peace and assaulting his wife on four occasions.

Procurator fiscal depute Amanda Gallagher, in her speech to the jury, said there was a "certain pattern of behaviour".

She said: "Derek Mitchell sees something or hears something that he doesn't like, Derek Mitchell reacts in a violent or destructive manner to that.

"On occasion Derek Mitchell tries to justify that behaviour. It's destructive, it's reprehensible, and the reason we are here, it's illegal ladies and gentleman."

She told the jury that Mr Mitchell saw something in a newspaper he did not like in April 2010 and he reacted. In evidence he told the court he vandalised Miss McGuire's car, believing she had an affair with a footballer while they were together and that he was devastated.

Ms Gallagher invited the jury to have sympathy for Ms McGuire because her personal life was splashed over the newspapers and said that the truth of the claims of an alleged affair was irrelevant. Mitchell denies the charges and the trial before sheriff Susan Sinclair continues.
