Legal aid bills to soar in human rights law shake-up

All suspects are to be allowed access to a solicitor as soon as police want to interview them under a seismic change to the Scottish legal system introduced quietly this week.

The move, designed to pre-empt a challenge under human rights legislation, is expected to cost taxpayers tens of millions of pounds in increased legal aid bills.
