A MAN is to stand trial charged with murdering a 53-year-old grandmother who had been out walking her dog.

Paul Ward, 21, is accused of killing Jean Campbell in Cranhill Park, Glasgow, on December 13 last year.

Mr Ward is alleged to have repeatedly struck Mrs Campbell on the head and body with a dog lead. Ward "by means unknown to the prosecutor" inflicted further injuries on Mrs Campbell.

Mr Ward was not present yesterday at the High Court in Glasgow. His QC Donald Findlay entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Judge Lady Rae set a trial due to start next February. The case is expected to last about two weeks.

Mr Ward along with co- accused Thomas Leyden are together said to have attempted to pervert the course of justice.

Mr Leyden, 22, pleaded not guilty to another charge of attempting to pervert justice, and of possessing cannabis. He is not charged with murder.
