A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a pilot at a flat in Edinburgh.

Darren McLauchlan, 23, was remanded in custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court after being charged with murdering Steven Barrett.

Mr Barrett, 27, who worked for Flybe , based at Edinburgh Airport, was discovered in Lochend Butterfly Way in the early hours of Saturday.

He was originally from Bridgend in Wales and had just left the RAF.

In a statement his family said: "We have all been left utterly devastated and are still in complete shock following Steven's death.Steven was a wonderful and loving brother, son and grandson. His kindness and love of life were apparent to anyone he met and no one ever had a bad word to say about him."

Mr Barrett joined the RAF in 2007 and won a Pilot of the Year award.

He joined Flybe as a commercial pilot at the end of 2012.
