A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being a member or supporter of Islamic State.

The man is also suspected of collecting information which may be useful to somebody who commits or prepares acts of terrorism, and of encouraging acts of terrorism.

He was seized by officers from the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command at an address in Newham, east London, yesterday morning.

He was arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and taken to a south London police station where he is being questioned.

Terror group IS has released a number of videos showing the barbaric murder of Western hostages.

British aid workers Alan Henning and David Haines and American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff were beheaded on camera by the jihadi organisation.

Japanese nationals Kenji Goto and Haruna Yukawa were both also killed by the terror group, as was Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh. US aid worker Kayla Mueller was also killed while held hostage by IS.

The terror group is waging a bloody war in Iraq and Syria, where it wants to create an Islamic Caliphate.

It was banned in the UK in June last year.
