A man has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexually motivated assault on a schoolgirl near a canal.

The 15-year-old was walking along the Union Canal path near Ratho, Edinburgh, in the early evening on Wednesday when she was grabbed from behind.

She told police she struggled free and jumped into the canal to escape. Officers said the teenager was not injured, but had been left shaken as a result.

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed an 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged incident.

He will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow.
