Man held after street death

A MAN in his 60s was detained by police last night over the death of another man who was found lying badly injured in the street.

Passers-by found the victim in Fintry Terrace, Dundee, at around four o'clock yesterday morning.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital, but died later from his injuries.

The dead man has been named by police as John McMurchie, 50, of Errol, Perthshire.

Locals residents said they were stunned by the Mr McMurchie's death.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "We are absolutely stunned this has happened on our doorstep.

"It's awful to think he was lying there in the street, having suffered the way he must have."

Another added: "There seems to have been a lot of killings in Dundee this year.

"It's terrifying something like this could happen on your doorstep. It is really sad.

Police cordoned off a huge area around Fintry Terrace's junction with Whitfield Drive as their investigations continued.

The blocked-off area even included the police station.

A house in nearby Murrayfield Drive was also cordoned off as part of the inquiry.

Tayside Police said a 63-year-old man had been detained and urged anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesman said: "Anyone in the area at the time, or who has any information, should get in touch on 0300 111 2222."
