A MAN who killed a former soldier who served in some of the world's most notorious trouble spots has been jailed for eight years.

George Rogerson, 22, stabbed Leon Cairney in the garden of the convicted man's home in Plean, Stirlingshire, in the early hours of December 22, 2012.

Rogerson was on bail when he killed Mr Cairney.

The former soldier had served in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Belize.

Rogerson was found guilty by a jury at the High Court in Dundee last month of culpable homicide.

In earlier proceedings, Rogerson admitted stabbing the 25-year-old and had tried to plead guilty to culpable homicide - but the Crown rejected his plea.

He went on trial accused of murder which he denied.

The High Court in Dundee heard that Rogerson had argued with neighbour Simon Blair in the street.

Mr Blair had asked Mr Cairney to confront Rogerson - who then ran from his house with a large knife.

The court heard from a pathologist who said Mr Cairney had been stabbed 11 times. His fiancee, Danielle Stillie, 21, the mother of his daughter Katie, two, said: "He was just a loving, gentle giant."

Sentence was passed yesterday by Judge Lord Kinclaven at the High Court in Edinburgh.
